DYEING WORKSHOPS
Please note: I do not recommend ANY dyeing classes for pregnant or nursing women.
I teach the Tie Dye, Stitched Resist, and Pole Wrap classes on site in 2-hour segments. For these on-site classes ONLY, the class maximum is 4 students and the fee is $25 per person including materials. Classes are by appointment; you might want to check my travel schedule.
Perennial Indigo Vat
Duration: half day
Level: Rank Beginner; no experience necessary
Class size limit : 12
Materials Fee: $10 per person
Synopsis
This is a basic introduction to the chemical (not fermentation) vat that can be maintained for decades. Learn about the history and use around the world. Learn how to start and maintain an indigo vat with powdered indigo, thiox, and lye. Students will make a few fabric samplers or dye yarn.
Learning Objectives
1. Safety first
2. Understand indigo; the chemistry and the magic for cellulose and protein fibers
3. Learn to revive a resting vat
Students should bring

Tie Dye |

Synopsis
Students will learn mechanical resist techniques, including marbling and tie-dye. Students will make 4 fabric samplers.

Stitched Resist |

Duration: half day
Level: Rank Beginner (I teach children age 9 and up)
Class size limit : 12
Materials Fee: $5 per person |
Synopsis
Students will explore stitched resist using 2 simple stitches in 3 methods. Stitches will be gathered tightly; students must have enough hand strength to pull stitches tight. Students will make 4 fabric samplers.
Learning Objectives
1. Understand the theory of gathering as a resist method
2. Practice a few simple stitches
3. Practice a few simple methods
4. Understand the effects of stitch length

Pole Wrap |
 |
Duration: half day
Level: Rank Beginner (I teach children age 9 and up)
Class size limit : 12
Materials Fee: $5 per person |
Synopsis
Students will explore the effects of wrapping cloth around a pole, pushing the cloth together to gather it, and dyeing it in indigo. Students will have the opportunity to combine other resist techniques with pole wrapping. Students will make 4 fabric samplers.
